{No Class & No Agreement}

Today was supposed to be the first day of class for Oakland University students.
This morning at 10:30, all classes were canceled. Why? Because all of the professors and faculty members are not agreeing with their new contract set by Oakland U. The tuition rate went up 9%, which is a pretty big increase. But the teachers are not benefiting from the tuition hike, however, the President of Oakland U is with a hefty increase in his yearly income. The President of the University got a $100,000 pay raise, cut health benefits for teachers and wants to freeze their salaries for 3 years...

"The faculty of OU are trying to hold down future tuition increases, and to make sure that there is a full range of academic choices for students and their studies that they deserve, as well as enough faculty members to teach them and to give students individual attention"

Today faculty members formed picket lines at the university entrances and withheld their services. No classes were held today. And classes have also been canceled for tomorrow as well. All because no agreement has been made between OU and the AAUP with is the organization for the faculty union.
Honestly, I am proud that these faculty members are standing up for themselves and the students. (There were students striking as well!) I went to the school today and gave my support. Its good to let your voice be heard and to stand up for what is right, and clearly what is going on behind closed doors at OU is wrong!
Hopefully an agreement with be made soon. Otherwise students will start dropping their classes and getting their money back.
