New Job!!!

Well I am excited to say that I am now employed!

I am using my BSW degree and putting it to good use at a nursing facility close by.  I have been able to utilize me social work skills and have also helped to reorganize a few things within the facility.

I have been working 20+ hours a week, which is great, and the facility is VERY flexible with my school schedule.    The best part about all of it is that I am able to USE my degree and GAIN experience in the field.

I am doing tons of assessments, mini mental exams, as well as discharge planning... butI am also learning the admissions process ! I have a lot to learn, but I am so excited to be there.

The job was completely unexpected.  . . . one day I got a call from Lisa saying that Rocky saw a sign for a 'part time social work' job.  I went right in and applied, I even knew the woman in human resources, and 4 days later I was offered a job.  I wasn't really even looking for it, it just feel into my lap!! How great is that? I guess it was meant to be.

So far, the job has been great! I am getting to know the staff and residents.

*Zumba Baby*

A few weeks ago my mom and I ordered Zumba from an infomercial... I was kind of a skeptic about it and if I would like it or not.  But the infomercial look really good, and we both wanted to try this workout. The guy that actually invented the workout instructs the workouts.

I had been wanting to try Zumba, since its been the latest and biggest craze.  Its offered it in town for $5 an hour, but I live 20 minutes away... and I think its only offered on Saturdays.  But an hour of working out and 40 minutes of drive time... it just didn't seem like it was worth it.  Our order had about 6 dvd's each with a couple workouts on them.

Well we just got the order at the end of last week.... I have done 3 of the workout, and my mom and I both decided that this workout defiantly will 'kick your ass.' But I feel so good when its done, and it really is fun.  You feel like you are dancing the entire times.  Its a really good workout.  I'm hoping to start doing a Zumba workout everyday, and to get back into running.

So here's to 2 days in a row of Zumba... I'm hoping to see and feel a difference.

{ Oakland University Graduation }

On Friday I had my graduation ceremony from Oakland University.

My parents and I drove to my Aunt Doris's house, (the aunt I currently live with), and so did Bobby and his parents.  We had appetizer's and drinks and then made our way to dinner.

I was given some wonderful graduation gifts...
My parents gave me a frame for my Phi Alpha certificate, and a really nice lab coat to wear at my internship.
Rocky and Lisa gave me some beautiful garnet earrings...

**************************************
After dinner, was the ceremony!

Pictures before:
The ceremony itself was students being inducted to Phi Alpha honors society, and the pinning for social work.  It was a very intimate ceremony with just students from the social work class.  It was pretty much a graduation ceremony.

Here's me... the college graduate.
Well almost... I have 8 more weeks left!

I am so thankful that I was able to have my family there with me to celebrate my accomplishments!
Thank you to my parents, Bobby, and Rocky & Lisa   for being so supportive, and loving me!

Internship & School

I am  in my official 5th week of my internship, at the hospital.  And I am absolutely loving it!   The people that I am working with are great, they are so nice and helpful and they are very eager to help me learn.

I am at the hospital, right in town.  Its literally less than 4 miles away. I am working there Tuesday and Thursday all day and a half a day on Wednesday. One of my favorite aspects of the hospital setting is that every day is different, and each week you are helping different patients.  I am working with patients getting knee & hip replacements, adoption cases, abuse & neglect cases, hospice, extended care placements (Nursing homes), cancer patients, and a ton of other situations.

This week is my 4th week on the floor and I am already taking my own patients to work with. I am helping to cover 3 different units, they are the joint unit, mother/baby, and a medical/surgical floor.  Doing all this makes everything I have been learning and working for seem real. Its hard to believe that at the end of June I will be done with my undergrad, and I cannot wait!

I have applied to Michigan State University Graduate of Social Work program, and I am anxiously awaiting to hear back from them,  that won't be until the end of March/April. I'm nervous about getting accepted.  I meet all the criteria, its just the matter of the number of applicants, and the room in the classes. Once I do finish my undergrad, I plan on moving closer to some of my family, I am a homebody and am ready to be closer to everyone.

That's all the updates on school for now. This semester is going by pretty quick. And Im sure that before I know it, I will be starting my last semester at Oakland.

Resolutions... 9 Days Late!

I forgot to post my new year’s resolutions for 2010. Not that you all care but I'm hoping that it might keep me a little more accountable if I write them down.

For 2010 I am going to:

  • Take my vitamins every.single.day. And not just a multivitamin. In the past year, or maybe even longer, I have had problems with having severely low iron. So I will be taking ...
                        ~A multivitamin
                          ~Slow release iron tablet
~Vitamin B Complex (To help absorb the iron)
                               ~Calcium x2
  • Workout at least 2-3 days a week.
  •  No more procrastination.
    • This past semester I was horrible about procrastinating. I'm not sure if its senioritis or justplain laziness. So I am putting end to it. I have to-do lists, and I am not going to wait till the last minute to write a paper, or anything of that nature. I'm going to get things done early!

There you have it, my three main goals of 2010. I am going to try my absolute best make them good habits and to continue them all year.

Q: Did you make New Year's resolutions for yourself?
